Anti-Colonialism Remains a Central Tenant of China’s Engagement in Africa

Colonialism and imperialism are the kinds of subjects that students in the U.S. and Europe study in school, framed within the assumption that they have very little applicability in contemporary geopolitics. But for the Chinese, these issues remain very close to the surface and make up a core tenant of Beijing’s discourse with its African counterparts. China Just Gave Kenya Two Luxury Buses and a New Foreign Ministry HQ

Image
Kenya’s new Foreign Ministry building will be built and paid for by the Chinese government.  Ambassador Zhou Pingjian made the announcement late last week during a visit with Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau  at the current foreign ministry headquarters in Nairobi. The new building will take approximately three to four years to build at a cost of $38 million  (Sh40 billion). Neither Ambassador Zhou nor PS Macharia provided any details as to when construction is expected to begin. The Chinese envoy said the donation is intended in part to thank Kenya for its support 50 years ago when China rejoined the United Nations. The foreign minister was equally effusive: “We, in this ministry, have special gratitude to the government of the People’s Republic of China for the generous grant towards the construction of a new ministry headquarters,”  he told the ambassador during a press event. Ambassador Zhou also  donated a pair of luxury buses to the Ke...

$25 Billion of Deals Signed During Annual Silk Road Forum in China

The Fifth annual Silk Road International Exposition ended on Saturday in the northwestern Chinese city of Xi’an where officials announced that $24.6 billion worth of investment deals were reportedly signed during the five-day event. In all,  organizers say 72 deals were signed during the exposition that attracted 1,900 attendees from 98 countries . It’s worth noting that it’s customary for Chinese event organizers to make these kinds of big announcements at the conclusion of major events. While there’s no doubt a lot of business was conducted during the forum, the deal announcements can be misleading. In many instances, Chinese officials will stockpile deals in the run-up to these kinds of gatherings in order to generate the largest number possible for the end-of-event statement.
