As the Nairobi Expressway Nears Completion, New Concerns That It Will be Just a “Road for the Rich”

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeHNA) is trying to reassure the capital’s beleaguered motorists that the nightmare traffic congestion caused by construction of the 27-kilometer Nairobi Expressway will soon be over. KeHNA officials said this week that the work is now 70% complete and China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is planning for the new 4-lane toll road to open in March 2022.

But there are mounting concerns over who will benefit most from this new expressway. Last month, Kenyatta University lecturer Laji Adoyo noted that the prohibition of matatus or minibusses that most commuters rely on to get around Nairobi means that the expressway “may ease traffic woes – but mostly for the wealthy” who have their own private cars.
