Blinken Calls on China, ASEAN to Put Pressure on Mynamar Junta

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged China and members of the ten-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to collectively pressure the military government in Myanmar to return to democracy.

“It is incumbent on China and in China’s interest to see Burma move back to the path it was on,” Blinken said at a press conference in Bangkok on Sunday, using the country’s former name. He also chastised ASEAN for not holding Yangon accountable for its failure to live up to the “five-point consensus” peace agreement that it agreed to with the bloc.
