Tanzania is the Latest Focal Point For Railway Construction in the Post-Megaloan Era

The Tanzanian government opened bidding to build the next stage of its new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) network that will extend to the border with Burundi.

Construction companies have been invited to submit proposals to build a 367-kilometer portion of the line that extends from Gitega to Uvinza in the far west of the country.

Unlike many other African countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Djibouti and Ethiopia, Tanzania’s new SGR will not be financed using Chinese loans. Chinese contractors are, however, already building portions of the network and will likely compete for this new section.

How Tanzania manages to finance the project more sustainably than a Chinese-financed railway in Kenya that was far more costly will be closely watched by other governments.

African Leaders Renew Calls for Urgent Debt Relief and Financial Assistance

Leaders from several of Africa’s largest countries including  South Africa ,  Kenya , and  Ethiopia  renewed their urgent appeals on Tuesday for debt relief, debt cancellation, and immediate financial assistance from the international community to help support economies across the continent amid the increasingly dire economic crisis. WEEK IN REVIEW: The G77 Bloc of Countries Together With China To Propose a New “Loss and Damage” Fund at the COP27 Summit

The G77 bloc of countries together with China is reportedly going to propose a new “loss and damage” fund at the COP27 summit to provide finance to poor countries impacted by climate disasters.  The fund appears to be a repackaged version of the failed “climate adaptation fund” that wealthy countries balked at financing.
