Nigerian Journalist Wins West African Reporting Prize For Coverage of Illegal Chinese Mining

Nigerian journalist Chinedu Asadu won the West Africa Media Excellence Conference Award on Friday for his daring undercover report on illegal Chinese mining in the Federal Capital Territory near Abuja.

Asadu, then a reporter for the Nigerian online publication The Cable and now at the Associated Press, published a scathing exposé last year of Hongao Mining Company’s pollution of local groundwater and operating without a license that led to government action against the company.
