Global Times Isn’t Happy With the FT’s Report on Chinese Lending in Africa

This week’s Financial Times story by Africa Editor David Pilling and Greater China Correspondent Kathrin Hille on the slowdown in Chinese infrastructure lending in Africa provoked a largely favorable response among international audiences but almost no reaction from Chinese stakeholders… until today.

Not surprisingly, the reactionary nationalist tabloid Global Times was not happy at all with Pilling and Hille’s framing of the story and summarily dismissed the report as “more like an opinion piece than a news article.”

A Groundbreaking New Report Provides Unprecedented Insights Into Chinese Lending Practices Around the World

A new report provides an unprecedented view into Chinese loan contracts with dozens of governments throughout the Global South. Researchers from AidData, the Kiel Institute, and the Center for Global Development analyzed 100 contracts between Chinese state-owned entities and government borrowers in 24 countries and then compared the terms of those contracts with those of other bilateral, multilateral and commercial creditors. China’s lending practices are notoriously opaque and until now very few people other than key principals involved in the actual loans have had the opportunity to review these contracts in detail so as to better understand the specific legal terms and how they’re structured. An agency affiliated with the DR Congo government issued its most forceful denunciation to date of the  Congo Hold-Up investigative report  that detailed massive corruption related to the $6 billion 2008 Sicomines deal.
