Cameroon Seeks Funding for Huawei Solar Project

The government of Cameroon is looking for funding for the third phase of a Huawei-built solar energy project that will connect 1,000 communities. The project started in 2017. The first phase was financed through a Huawei buyer’s credit, and the second via a loan from the Bank of China.

The fact that the government is now looking more widely for phase 3 funding indicates the shakeup we’ve seen in Chinese infrastructure financing in the Global South over the last few years, as policy banks have increasingly cut funding. Recent research by Boston University shows that Chinese policy banks extended no new overseas energy loans last year.
