WEEK IN REVIEW: South African Rand Falls for Seventh Consecutive Week due to Concerns about China’s Economic Wellbeing

The South African rand fell for a seventh consecutive session due in part to investor concerns about the economic well-being of the country’s largest trading partner, China.   The SA currency is now at its lowest level since January, weighed down by the ongoing lockdowns that have cooled demand for African natural resources by keeping factories offline and limiting operations at many of China’s largest ports.  (REUTERS) The Swiss mining giant Glencore will now join several Chinese and Israeli firms to face scrutiny in the DRC over unfair mining contracts.   Kinshasa added Glencore’s Mutanda copper and cobalt mine to the growing list of contracts signed under the previous government of Joseph Kabila that will now be reviewed. Some of Mutanda’s mining permits expire in May and Kinshasa will want to ensure that any contract renewals are equitable for the DRC.  (BLOOMBERG) … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. Chinese Miner Sinomine Announces Pivot Away from Zambia, Citing Debt Crisis

The Chinese mineral exploration and mining company Sinomine (aka China Mining Resources Group) announced on Tuesday that it’s withdrawing from a mining and construction contract with the Zambian government because of Zambia’s debt crisis and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  The company  released a statement  on Tuesday announcing the decision. Because no funds have yet been disbursed, the contract termination is expected to go ahead without dispute. Seen in isolation, the termination is a minor data point. However, it is an indicator that signals major implications for Zambia and the world: … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. Toll Costs in Cambodia a Warning for Kenya?

As Kenyan stakeholders complain because tolls to use their new Nairobi Expressway have increased  before the Chinese-built road has even opened , they should spare a thought for their compatriots in Cambodia. While the toll on the Nairobi Expressway will start from about $1 for the smallest vehicles, single car users of the  soon-to-be-completed Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway  will pay $12. This price will kick in after a month of free access. After a year, the toll could be hiked to $19.  Both roads are being built by the Chinese state-owned construction behemoth China Road and Bridge Corporation. The cost difference is partly due to a difference in size.  The Cambodian road  is 7 times longer and contains 89 bridges. However, both are funded by public-private partnerships in which CRBC will recoup its cost through tolls. Both roads will open soon.  … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. Read exclusive insights on the key trends shap

A Lot Has Changed in China-Africa Relations But Not Beijing’s Passion to Build Stadiums

China improving its image in Africa by building sports stadiums is one of the hoariest cliches of Africa-China relations, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true. A Small African Trade Show in China Highlights Some Very Big Trends

The “Quality African Goods” (非洲好物) shopping festival kicked off on Thursday as part of a larger two-week e-commerce bonanza organized by a group of provincial governments together with China’s Ministry of Commerce. The African portion of the event is relatively small overall and certainly won’t do much to move the needle of China’s highly imbalanced trade with most African countries. … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. Pakistan’s PM Vows “Exemplary Punishment” For Those Who Killed Three Chinese in Karachi Bomb Attack

Pakistan’s new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif  paid a condolence visit to the Chinese embassy  in Islamabad on Tuesday. He vowed revenge against those responsible for a suicide bombing in Karachi that killed three Chinese nationals earlier in the day. “We will not sit with ease till the criminals are arrested and punished and we will hang the culprits who took the life of the Chinese nationals,”  the Prime Minister told Chargé d’affaires Pang Chunxue. … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. How Chinese Companies Came to Dominate the DR Congo’s Mining Sector

Image
Bloomberg journalists Michael Kavanagh and William Clowes are the subjects of  a new mini-documentary  that explains how China became the dominant foreign mining power in the DR Congo. The 17-minute video doesn’t provide any new information about the origins of companies SICOMINES or the controversy surrounding the estimated $25 million that Chinese intermediaries funneled to family representatives of former Congolese President Joseph Kabila documented in the  2021 #CongoHoldUp investigation . … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. Egyptian Dairy Company Forced to Cancel Controversial TV Commercial Featuring Angry Chinese Boss

Image
The Egyptian dairy company Green Land took down its new TV commercial this week for its spreadable cheese product that featured an angry Chinese boss berating his local employees for choosing to eat a snack rather than get back to work. The spot sparked immediate outrage in Egypt’s Chinese community and prompted concerns that it would even offend Chinese sensibilities back in Beijing — potentially even jeopardizing the flow of Chinese foreign investment in the country. The decision to remove the ad was no doubt painful for Green Land since it came during the Ramadan holiday month when TV viewership is at its highest in Egypt. … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. TRANSLATION: Chinese Ambassador Zhu Jing Reflects on His First Visit to the Congo’s Strategically Vital Southern Mining Zone

Chinese ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zhu Jing, is back in Kinshasa now after a week-long tour earlier this month to the country’s strategically important mining zones in Lualaba and Katanga Provinces. Those two regions are at the heart of a rapidly escalating geopolitical competition among the world’s major economic powers over who will have access to the DRC’s vast supply of cobalt and other metals/minerals that are used to power electric vehicles. China, for now, is the dominant foreign player in the Congolese cobalt extractive sector, and Zhu’s visit was widely perceived as a way to convey to international rivals in Washington, D.C., Brussels and elsewhere that Beijing’s standing in the region remains formidable. … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. Chinese Cobalt Stakeholders Weigh In on Durban Chaos

The impact of the floods that disrupted operations at South Africa’s Durban harbor is being felt throughout the cobalt supply chain. The Swiss cobalt miner Glencore reacted by  declaring force majeure , but so far little has been heard from the Chinese companies that dominate both cobalt mining in the DRC and 80% of global cobalt refining. A Chinese Perspective on a Fellow Chinese-National Being Sentenced to 20 Years in Jail For Whipping Local Employee

This week’s sentencing of a Chinese mine owner in Rwanda to twenty years in prison for whipping an employee drew a sharp reaction from African netizens. However, beyond a pro forma statement from the Chinese embassy in Kigali, Chinese reactions have been much rarer. However, an anonymous Chinese business owner in Rwanda recently posted a fascinating reflection on the implications of the ruling for Africa-China labor relations and why they sometimes turn so sour . The author, nicknamed ‘Africa Bob,’ admits to being baffled by Sun Shujun’s decision to assault his employee: “According to my personal experience, the Rwandan government and police are very protective of investors, and they take law enforcement seriously. Why choose to publicly whip someone like this and to make people watch? This is not only illegal but also a very stupid management style. … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. Read exclusive insights on the key trends shaping

Nairobi Expressway Tolls Increase Before It’s Even Opened

Kenya’s new Chinese-built Nairobi Expressway  is hiking its toll prices , even though it hasn’t opened yet. The government announced that motorists using the motorway will pay 350 Kenyan shillings ($3.03) more than previously announced, bringing the total toll to between 120 and 1,800 shillings ($1.04-$12.54), depending on the vehicle. The increase is due to a weakening of the shilling compared to the U.S. dollar. The expressway was financed by China Road and Bridge Corporation, which will recoup its costs via tolls. This private-public partnership is aimed at reducing infrastructure-related debt, but the  tolls have proven controversial  among Kenyans. … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis. Rotimi Amaechi Opponents Double Down on China Smears

Opponents of Nigerian Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi’s presidential run are using paid media content to paint him as too close to China. This is the newest attempt to link Amaechi with China, after the Chinese embassy in Abuja hit back at similar rumors last week. The allegations play into long-running but unfounded anxieties about the impact of Chinese debt on the Nigerian economy. On Friday, the Nigerian newspaper Premium Times published an article under the headline “Nigeria and the danger of Chinese loans,” which alleged that Amaechi is an apologist for predatory lending by China. The article is listed as a “press release,” that is, as paid content. Xi Hints at Plans for New China-led Global Security Order

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for a new global security initiative while rejecting the economic decoupling championed by the United States. Xi spoke Thursday at the Boao Forum for Asia, traditionally an occasion for the announcement of broad, new policy directions. The speech gave a glimpse into China’s views of a China-led global order, which is sure to gain attention throughout the Global South, amid the ongoing impacts of the Ukraine conflict. With Access to South Africa’s Main Port Still Hampered, The Rush Is on To Build Alternate Trade Routes for DRC Resources

With road and rail  access to South Africa’s main port in Durban  still blocked by the damage from  the past week of record floods , there’s a new urgency to develop alternate trade routes for the vast quantities of natural resources that flow from the mining belts in the southern DRC and Zambia — mostly bound for China. China’s Ambassador to Liberia Moves to Stamp Out Any Comparisons Between the Situations in Ukraine and Taiwan

China’s ambassador to Liberia, Ren Yishang published a long op-ed in  Wednesday’s edition of the New Dawn Liberia newspaper  complaining about a recent article by the former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe comparing the current crisis in Ukraine with the situation regarding Taiwan. Senior U.S. Diplomat Explains What Makes the U.S. So Uneasy About China’s Presence in Africa

While there have been countless seminars on China-Africa relations in Washington featuring scholars, think tank analysts, and journalists, it’s quite rare that these discussions feature high-ranking State Department officials. The higher up in the ranks, the more they prefer to keep discussions out of the public eye. Briefing Gives Rare Public Glimpse into China’s Positioning on Ethiopian War

Ethiopia’s ambassador to China,  Teshome Toga, briefed the Chinese think tank  the Center for China and Globalization (CCG) on the ongoing crisis in Ethiopia on Wednesday. While this kind of briefing isn’t news per se, it does provide a rare glimpse into how Chinese positions on thorny issues like peace in the Horn of Africa are shaped. This is because  the CCG isn’t a run-of-the-mill think tank . It was established under the  United Front Work Department , which reports directly to the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. World Bank Chief Calls for New Debt Resolution Tools, Blames China for Debt Crises

David Malpass, the president of the World Bank, again singled out China in calling for new debt restructuring mechanisms to help the developing world. Trend of Shanghai “Blessing Videos” Featuring Africans Raises Dark Memories

Shanghai’s COVID lockdown  is resurrecting  a troubling trend in Africa-China social media. Online agents accept orders to create tailor-made videos to inspire Shanghai residents to persevere through the pandemic-related restrictions. The problem is that these videos include Africans, dancing and holding up signs in Chinese. While the trend is a reworking of services offering bespoke videos of birthday wishes, it has a darker history. Over the last few years, online services have sold and circulated  videos of Africans  (including children) being paid a pittance to  sing and utter phrases  in Mandarin and to hold up signs. When it came out that some of these signs  were racist , and that the payment and production contexts were highly problematic, the issue caused strong pushback on African social media. … Get a daily email packed with the latest China-Africa news and analysis.
