China’s Belt and Road financing and investments fell in the first half of the year, with no new spending in Russia, Sri Lanka, and Egypt, according to a study by the  Green Finance & Development Center  in Shanghai.  Financing and investments were at $28.4 billion in the first six months, compared with $29.4 billion in the same period a year earlier, according to the center, which is affiliated with Fudan University. The Kenyan government cut a check for $226 million last week to service its debts to the China Exim Bank for the loans used to build the Standard Gauge Railway. The Kenyan Central Bank singled out the repayment as a reason why the country’s foreign exchange reserves dropped from $7.95 billion to $7.73 billion. China stands apart from Kenya’s other bilateral lenders  who’ve agreed to extend debt servicing deferrals. The Chinese battery metals company Ganfeng Lithium Co. will spend $962 million to buy 100% of the Argentinian lithium compounds producer Lithea. Chinese foreign direct investment in BRI countries jumped 10.2% to $8.2 billion in the first five months of the year, according to new data from the Chinese government.  Singapore, Indonesia and Pakistan were among the top FDI destinations in 2022. But the news wasn’t so good for Chinese enterprises. That same period saw an 18% decrease in the value of signed contracts in BRI countries.  (XINHUA SILK ROAD — in Chinese) China bought a record amount of Russian oil in June, displacing Saudi Arabia as Beijing’s top supplier for the second consecutive month.  In the three-month period through May, Chinese oil buys from Russia doubled year-on-year to  $18.9 billion  and now account for 15% of China’s total imports. The United States government on Wednesday  imposed new sanctions against Iranian oil companies and the network of firms that help facilitate the flow of Iranian crude to markets in East Asia , specifically China. Every year, millions of barrels of oil are effectively laundered via third-party countries,  including the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Malaysia , to circumvent U.S. sanctions.
